In the name of God,amen,I WILLIAM HEWITT of the city of Carlisle within the County of Cumberland,yeoman,Being sick and weak in body ,but of sound and perfect memory,Praised be to God for the same and knowing that all men must die when it pleases God to call them and release them from the burden of this life being obvious to me to put things in order,I do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following,and first being penitent and forgiven the blame of my earthly sins,most humbly do ask forgiveness for the same.I do give and commit my soul unto Almighty God by Jesus Christ my saviour my redeemer and through whose miserable death and due blame assuredly to be found and to have full remission of forgiveness of all my sins,and that my soul with my body at the day of the general resurrection shall live again with joy,and through the merits of Christ death and passion I hope to please and inherit the Kingdom of Heaven prepared for the Choir and Angels.and my body to be buried in the church yard as it pleases my executors,hereinafter named whosoever I shall think suitable with the advice of my loving friend EDWARD JAMES and as Notary of Law for as the said hath in moiety but me,my will and naming as that shall be employed and bestowed as hereinafter by this my last will and testament by me and first do annul and renounce all and make void all other wills and testaments made by me and ordain and appoint this to be my last will and testament.

Secondly;I give and bequeath unto my cousin JOHN JACKSON of the City of Carlisle my house in Botchergate within the said City to him and his heirs forever.

Thirdly whereas by my freehold deed within Parish of [S???sin?] and possession thereof had and exchanged for the valuable consideration therein expressed.I have bargained and sold unto EDWARD JAMES of the City of Carlisle ,Merchant,his heirs and assigns for ever.all my six acres of arable land and meadow be it marsh or ?/iffe being in several places in Upperby fields in the manor of the Sorrage of Carlisle Castle in the County of Cumberland as in and by the said deed bearing date the 13th day of April anno Domini 1660 apparent now my will and testament and my[blurred] is hereby altered that the said deed and every thing therein contained and shall not be made invaluable or insufficient but shall be [????monled at ?on by my wishes to remain to the said EDWARD JAMES his heirs and assigns for ever

fourthley,I give and bequeath my Mansion house wherein now I live with one garden or barn and wood ??? one habitation appurtenances thereto belonging but my sister JANE HEWITT,and to the child of her body,and after her death if she die without issue lawfully begoten,then I give and bequeath the said mansion hereto with the said garden or barn and wood and said stables with all those appurtenances unto the said EDWARD JAMES and his heirs forever.

Fiftly.I give and bequeath unto my said sister one acre of ground by ????????? then one acre of half acre of ground known by the name Woodlands..

Sixthly.I give and bequeath unto my said sister one acre and a half of ground lying in a place called the Maries and also one half acre lying in ??????clifes and for the rest of my goods and chattels in this my last will and testament, not given and bequeathed my debts and funeral expenses discharged,I do give and bequeath unto my said sister whom I do make my sole executor of this my last will and testament.and I give my beloved friend EDWARD JAMES aforesaid to be assistor of this my last will and testament and to be aiding and assisting my said executrix or said executors. I do recommend [these next part is faded]it looks like EDWARD JAMES was a trusted friend for twenty years.

In witness whereof this to be my last will and testament,I have set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of April one thousand seven hundred and sixty one.
