Notes for MARY MORLAND:
January 20, 1735/36, Christened Kirkby Stephen daughter of William Morland. Thomas Slee Mary's husband died poor in October 1762 leaving her with three children. The children being Thomas at just under 2 years, John at 3 years and Elizabeth at 5 years. It was not unusual for a widow to remarry. On the parish records a Mary Slee (with no status listed or age) married a George Peacock (also no status or age) in April 1769. She also signed with a mark whereas she had signed with a well formed signature in 1755 on the marriage record.

In Parish Registry of Kirkby Stephen the marriage record is as follows" Banns of marriage were published in this Church between Thomas Slee and Mary Morland both of this parish June 15, June 22 and June 29 by me William Fawcett Vicar. Thomas Slee and Mary Morland both of this parish were married in this church by Banns this 30th day of June 1755 by me William Fawcett Vicar (the Reverend William Fawcett of Kirkby Stephen died Jan, 24 1773 aged 57) signed Thomas Slee (mark) and Mary Morland (full and well formed signature - which was considered bad luck at the time) in the presence of two witnesses Thos- Thornberry his + mark and Edward Coperthwaite.
Thomas Thornberry married a Mary Slee in Kirkby Stephen on December 24, 1752, this is possibly either Thomas Slee's brother in law or Mary Slee was a cousin.

I have used the second record because of the date and age - see marriage record, and naming of children (no Josuah or Alice). Confirmed by 1851 Census which states that Margaret Robinson was born in Soulby.

From a note (November 19, 1997) from Jane Ayres (of Kitchner/Doon - Homer Watson Gallery) who knew Harold and Mina Slee as a child. Historical Atlas of Waterloo and Wellington Counties, Walker and Miles. Toronto 1881, page 12 - Waterloo Township, Slee, Thomas, farmer owns 224 acres of land, Lot 10 (&11) Beasley Old Survey. Is a native of England. Born 1832, settled in this county, 1856. Is Postmaster and School Trustee. PO Address, Doon. Farm of Thomas Slee on a Map of Waterloo Township and it is the farm where Harold and Mina Slee lived where Connestoga College and new road are now located.
Microfilm copy of death record states that Thomas Slee of Waterloo Twp, Waterlod died on February 6, 1893 at 60 yrs 9mos and 11 days. He was a Methodist and farmer who was born in England. Died of Heart Failure after a duration of 12 months. He was attended by a Dr. McIntyre. His son John R. Slee was the informant on February 14, 1893.
In 1861 Canadian Census it is recorded the Thomas and his wife (not legible) lived in a frame house with Margaret Slee 3 years and Mary Hannah Slee 2 years
